The Walking Dead universe is about to get a whole lot bigger. AMC network has just announced a third Walking Dead TV series is in active development. The expansion of the franchise comes as The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead are in their 9th and 5th seasons, respectively.

There are no other details regarding the third spinoff as of this writing. Recently departed cast member Lauren Cohan has suggested that a spinoff centered around her character, Maggie, could be a possibility. With Cohan current staring in the ABC series Whisky Cavalier alongside Scott Foley, it might be a stretch to do two shows at once.

During a conference call with The Wrap, COO Ed Carroll shed some light on the recent spinoff news. According to Carroll, “We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines.”

With the recent decline in ratings for both zombie shows, AMC might just be looking to inject a little life back into the universe. The recent departure of beloved character Rick Grimes certainly hasn’t helped. Rick will, however, be back in three feature-length films. Still, his departure from the show was a major blow to fans.

The series is definitely heading into a state of oversaturation. With three TV shows, movies, video games, comics, books, and a vast toy line, the public may simply be getting tired of seeing The Walking Dead. The only saving grace is the sheer amount of stories still to be told. Fans of the series only know a small slice of The Walking Dead universe. Hopefully, the creators will take the story to another part of the country, or to another continent altogether.
