Begin the search for weapons, tools, and shelter – Team17’s The Survivalists is almost here.

And to give players an early look at the sprite-based survival game, the Worms devs and publisher are celebrating the Steam Summer Festival by releasing an online co-op demo of the game on the popular platform.

The Survivalists demo is available now on Steam until Thursday June 26 12pm EST. You, alongside four other virtual island-dwellers, will be able to hunt, craft, and, of course, survive your way through a cutesy-style survival sim.

The demo will show off the game’s diverse array of gameplay features including the online co-op element, crafting abilities, friendships with monkeys (you read that correctly), and the secret-laden exploration.

The Survivalists encourages you to explore your surroundings, where you’ll discover a wide range of dangerous enemies, mythical creatures, and other secrets. But of course, exploration means nothing unless you can survive to indulge in it and this is where the game’s crafting system comes in. In the demo, you’ll be able to craft a selection of the weapons, tools, and shelters you need to aid you and your comrades’ survival.

Enlisting the aid of the monkeys certainly adds a dimension to The Survivalists, being able to protect the group and plunder resources for your Survivalist group. They also look adorably cute as does the game as a whole. Despite the relatively solemn task of surviving in a desolate location, the game’s sprite-based art style gives The Survivalists a charming cutesy feel that’ll provide more laughs than horror. The retro feel will undoubtedly feel like a welcome feature for many.

And while a crafting system is present, first impressions of the game reveal a seeming simplicity to affairs. If you’re looking for a bit of retro-style multiplayer fun, The Survivalists could very well be your thing – and another hit for Team17.

The game will be released sometime this year not only on Steam but PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
