A full trailer for The Suicide Squad has finally been released. Following a tease yesterday from director James Gunn (and a pretty sweet poster reveal), the red band trailer for the upcoming DC flick dropped earlier today. Be careful who you watch it around, though, because it earns that red band label. There isn’t much family-friendly content to be found, from plenty of swears to King Shark ripping someone in half. You can check out the trailer below.

As one might expect from the mind behind Guardians of the Galaxy and cult classics like Slither and Super, The Suicide Squad looks absolutely insane. It looks like Gunn will blend his trademark humor from his Marvel work with the uber-violent missions Task Force X normally finds themselves on.

The new movie will be a revitalization, not necessarily a reboot or sequel, of 2016’s Suicide Squad. However, DC’s choice to revamp the team after the heavily criticized first movie is a smart call. The only characters we know returning from that movie are Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Amanda Waller, and Captain Boomerang.

The first footage of the movie premiered at last year’s DC Fandome event. However, that short teaser only served to introduce the impressively stacked cast. This trailer still keeps plot details pretty light. We’re given a brief summary of what the Suicide Squad is: a group of supervillains completing a government mission in order to reduce their prison sentences. And if they refuse, bombs implanted at the base of their skull will explode.

Despite the poor reception of the 2016 film, DC is apparently doing all it can to make Suicide Squad as popular as it can be. Rockstar Games, the developers behind the Batman Arkham games, is currently working on a game revolving around the team. John Cena’s character, Peacemaker, is getting an HBO Max spinoff series next year. The character additionally took the front spot in the comics, which relaunched earlier this year.

What did you think about The Suicide Squad red band trailer? The release hits theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021.
