If you’ve been longing for a new Game Boy title to relive your 8-bit childhood then we have the answer for you – The Shapeshifter, an indie title by retro developer Green Boy Games is just around the corner from it’s estimated July 26 release. Following a highly successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, The Shapeshifter will be released physically, cartridges, pocket guides and all. There are even plans to bring the title to the NES.

In The Shapeshifter, you will take up the role of Elliot – a normal guy looking to spend some time in the great outdoors with his friends. After falling asleep by the campfire Elliot is awoken to cries for help in the distance. Upon investigating he finds an elf in the woods. The elf pleads for Elliot to help save their world from an evil wizard. He grants Elliot the ability to shapeshift into any creature he touches in order to complete this quest. However, this power will only last until dawn so Elliot takes off into the Elves’ world with great haste. Along the way, you will be solving puzzles and traversing platformer-style environments as a variety of different animals.

The physical release of The Shapeshifter will feature a pocket guide, a collector’s coin, a high-grade protection case, and (apparently) the first and only code wheel to accompany a Game Boy release. The game is compatible with all Game Boy handheld versions (Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, etc.).

If you’re looking for more new, original Game Boy games you can pre-order The Shapeshifter, as well as other titles from Green Boy Games via their website. The Shapeshifter 2 is already in development and slated for a release at the beginning of next year.
