The Sandlot is set for a return, 25 years after the original movie was released. This time, however, we’re getting a full TV series of the coming of age sports film.

Initially released in 1993, The Sandlot is widely regarded as a cult classic comedy film starring Tom Guiry. The Sandlot is set in 1962 and focuses on a young baseball prodigy and his teammates taking in the new kid, Scotty Smalls, on the block. The film follows their adventures and Smalls’ mission to improve at baseball so that he can fit in with his new friends. They are also tasked with overcoming the legend that is the Beast.

We don’t know too much about the planned TV series other than a few interesting details. It’s going to be a direct sequel to the film and, more impressively, will feature the entire cast of the original movie. On top of this, the original screenwriter and film director, David Mickey Evans, will also be taking a primary role behind the series’ creation.

Fans of the franchise are probably familiar with the concept of a sequel to the 1993 original. After all, The Sandlot 2 was released in May 2005. However, that sequel didn’t have all that much in common with the original with only one returning cast member appearing, James Earl Jones as Mr. Mertle. It would seem that this TV series adaptation will feature significantly more fan service and references to the original.

Reportedly, this TV series will take place 21 years after the original film, which would make the cast all grown up. We know that in that time period Benjamin “Benny” Franklin Rodriguez, played by Mike Vitar, becomes a professional Major League Baseball start and Scotty Smalls takes up a full-time sportscasting position.
