Did you love the alternate paths in the original Resident Evil? The Resident Evil 2 remake will still feature two campaigns, one with Leon Kennedy and one with Claire Redfield—but the two are being “pared down” in a bid to make them more appealing to modern players.
According to producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi in an interview with Rely on Horror, the campaigns are being streamlined in a manner that makes them more straightforward, removing the “zapping” system from the original game. This was a title given to the fact that there were both A and B parts of the campaigns for each character. It offered varying perspectives on the events that unfolded throughout the game. That has been removed in favor of two separate campaigns that you can play at your leisure.
“We still want to replicate that feeling of seeing two sides to the same story through both character’s perspective in their own way,” Hirabayashi said. He also confirmed that the campaigns in their entirety have been simplified a bit to make them more “elegant,” combining elements of both stories into one campaign as well.
Hirabayashi said that players today want “deep/intense experiences” when it comes to storylines, and with the previous “zapping” system, the story was stretched too thin, creating a sense of repetition by having players complete campaigns multiple times to see everything. It sounds like a good move, and we can’t wait to see what the Resident Evil 2 remake has in store when it launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Jan. 25, 2019.
