Supermassive Games’ breakout title was 2015’s Until Dawn, a horror game that saw a group of young adults attempting to survive a reunion turned deadly in the snow-covered mountains, with the players’ decisions and actions deciding who lives and who dies. While the studio has made some other smaller projects like the episodic Dark Pictures Anthology, their latest release, The Quarry, is closer in scale to their beloved 2015 title. While it shares similarities with Until Dawn, many players have been asking the question if The Quarry is a sequel to their previous title. So let’s answer the question of whether or not The Quarry is a sequel to Until Dawn.

Is The Quarry A Sequel To Until Dawn?

While there hasn’t been an official statement of whether or not the two games take place in the same universe, The Quarry is definitely its own story that is not a direct sequel to the events of Until Dawn. Supermassive has said in the past that the game is a “spiritual successor” to Until Dawn rather than a full-blown sequel. The Quarry does continue to carry over many aspects of the Until Dawn, like using many familiar horror tropes that fans of the genre will be all-too-familiar with, as well as giving the player the chance to shape the story and decide the fates of the cast of playable characters, but the events of Supermassive’s previous outing don’t tie into the new story.

The Quarry: The Monsters Explained

While fans of Until Dawn might be upset that fan-favorite characters like Sam, Mike, and Josh won’t be appearing in the new title, it also means that new players will be able to jump right into The Quarry without needing to be caught up with the previous titles.

The Quarry is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
