I’m sure that the headline news that will come out of Sony’s recent PlayStation 5 showcase is in regards to the price and launch date for PlayStation’s next-generation console, but another interesting announcement came just before that one – and it may be a direct answer to a rival’s very successful service.

Xbox Game Pass has been a story of continuous success since it launched back in June 2017. Over the years since, it has become Microsoft’s driving force coming into the dawn of a new generation (recently adding EA Play to its incredible value), and it seems Sony has finally taken note. Introducing, the PlayStation Plus Collection, a selection of PlayStation 4 titles that will be playable for Plus members when the PS5 launches in November.

The following games have been confirmed for the Collection:

  • God of War
  • Bloodborne
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Fallout 4
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Days Gone
  • Until Dawn
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Battlefield 1
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Batman Arkham Knight
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us
  • Persona 5 (which, by the way, is my favorite game of all time, just so you know)
  • Resident Evil Biohazard

It’s interesting to see where this leaves PlayStation’s other services going forward. PlayStation Plus already had a collection of sorts, but the policy of giving out free games every month becomes nearly obsolete when coinciding with a service like this. PlayStation Now, on the other hand, is in an even more bizarre situation. The streaming service hasn’t hit the heights that Sony expected, but the enormous lineup of games on offer – stretching from PS2, PS3, and PS4 games – is not something to be taken lightly. It has to be asked though, where does it go? The style of subscriptions when comparing the two services (ie. a library of games to play at a moment’s notice) are near identical, and surely it has to be addressed at some point in the near future.
