Original Trailer

Us fans waited with bated breath for any update or news about the latest Outlast game. In a short teaser, we saw a Cold War-era experiment; an unsettling set of surgical instruments; and then a pair of VR goggles surgically attached to the main protagonists’ head via an unsanitary drill. We saw obstacle-course-style gameplay and a hopeful release date: “Freedom Ends in 2021.”

Gameplay Trailer

Not much else was known until a recent glimpse into The Outlast Trials’ gameplay trailer restored hope. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Red Barrels dropped a gameplay trailer for the long-awaited game. Bloody Disgusting reported The Outlast Trials gameplay trailer “showcasing the Saw/Escape Room style shift in style.” In most of its horror glory, fans also saw levels and areas featuring horrifying mannequins in strange studio sets that are almost as unnerving as the villains themselves. Though its intended functionality was kept under wraps, Polygon reports the series changes things up, stating, “[Red Barrels] has an intimidating new wrinkle for dedicated fans; cooperative multiplayer for up to four players.”

An uncomfortable test of endurance matched with high-intensity cooperative play opens the door for numerous possibilities. The Outlast Trials may focus more on strategy and puzzles along with its iconic stealth play. It’s difficult to say with a game that doesn’t even have a release date, but with this horror gameplay trailer dropped, fans are one step closer to booting up the game on their home consoles.
