What an effect that good marketing and a solid platform make. The Medium, a horror game by Bloober Team that is available right now on Xbox Game Pass alongside Steam and Epic Games Store, and has only been out for a matter of days. Despite that small window, it has already made back the costs spent making and marketing the game, according to a report on Polish website Money.

The Medium has been Bloober Team’s biggest undertaking to date. The Polish developer has already seen decent success with their previous games, which includes the two Layers of Fear games, Observer, and the recent Blair Witch game, which is good because you have a dog you can pet. The Medium doesn’t have that, but the lack of dog hasn’t stopped the game from making back its development costs in only a few days, which it can say is fairly warranted, judging by its review scores.

It makes it even more amazing when you consider its availability on different storefronts. While The Medium exists on Steam and the Epic Games Store, perhaps the most impressive feat is considering its status on Xbox Game Pass. See, while most games are cross-compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, The Medium is only available on the latter, which only has a fraction of the install base as the former.

We know by now that with services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus/Now, the platform holder pays the developer a fee that would equate to the sales that would have otherwise be raked in had they done a traditional release. Marketed as a big Xbox console exclusive (even given a spotlight at one of the Xbox Showcases in 2020), it likely would’ve been given a sizable slice of Game Pass Dollar Pie (which I imagine given the success of that service, tastes very good).

With The Medium‘s sales success, we look forward to the next project that Bloober Team decides to make, and you can be sure we’ll be all over the news when they do make their next hit.
