The second season of The Mandalorian has added some big-name directors in Robert Rodriguez and Peyton Reed. Both directors took to Twitter yesterday to reveal their involvement in honor of Star Wars day, May the 4th.

I am truly humbled to say I have now had the very rare privilege of directing the biggest star in the universe. @StarWars #TheMandalorian #MayThe4th #StarWarsDay pic.twitter.com/pcmzOHfgaW

Robert Rodriguez’s most recent major release was 2019’s Alita: Battle Angel. He’s been working steadily in Hollywood for decades. His other work includes Sin City, Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn, and the Spy Kids series. But The Mandalorian will be his first venture into the Star Wars universe.

With Peyton Reed, Disney is keeping it in the family. Reed is also responsible for directing MCU entries Ant-Man and its sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp. His other work includes romantic comedies Yes Man, Down With Love, and The Break-Up.

Rodriguez and Reed join several directors returning from Season 1 of The Mandalorian. Dave Filoni, the executive producer of  The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, made his live-action directorial debut with the pilot episode and also helmed Episode 5. He will return for Season 2. Rick Famuyiwa, who directed Episodes 2 and 6, and Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed Episode 4, are also returning. Additionally, the second season will see show creator Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King) step into the director’s role.

Every year, May the 4th brings a surplus of Star Wars news and releases. In addition to these director announcements, a documentary series on The Mandalorian released on Disney+. Disney announced a new movie coming from Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi and confirmed a new Disney+ series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland. In the video game world, developer ILMxLAB announced Vader Immortal is coming to PSVR. And Respawn Entertainment updated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order with new combat challenges and cosmetics. No matter what corner of the galaxy far, far away you find yourself in, it’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan.
