Ever since the introduction of Epona, The Legend of Zelda series has made horses a huge part of the gameplay experience. While we mention in our Beginner’s Guide that horses aren’t quite as useful as you might think, they are still an important part of the game, and something you’ll want to work on getting. If you speak to the right people, they’ll tell you how to catch a horse, but with the freedom this game gives you, you might miss it. So we’ll tell you. Here’s our guide on how to catch a horse in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We’ll also explain some spots where you can find them.

The method is actually pretty instinctive, fitting with the idea that these are wild beast. As Link you want to locate a group of horses, which apparently is referred to as a “team” or “harras”, so now you’ve learned your odd fact for the day. Once you do find the horse you want to catch you need to sneak up on them. Click the left thumbstick to crouch, but you still need to keep an eye on your sound meter in the bottom left of the screen.

Move slowly toward the horse, making sure that you are behind them and they cannot see you. If they move too much just sit still for a bit. Get close enough and the A button prompt will change to “Mount”. Press it and you’ll grab onto the horse and hop on his back. You can now ride away, though you’ll want to hit the L button to calm the horse whenever he does something good, such as sprinting after you hit A.

As far as where to find horses in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The two quickest spots are right in front of the Great Plateau, just hop down to the north and look for the very open field. Others are found past the Twin Peaks that the main quest directs you to. In general, horses in Breath of the Wild are found in these open fields of grass. Watch for them and head toward them whenever you want to catch a wild horse.
