For all the controversy surrounding The Last of Us Part II, you would think that sales would’ve been affected by it all. Well, as a matter of fact, it was, but maybe not in the direction most would assume.

According to July’s NPD report, The Last of Us Part II has become Sony’s third-best-selling videogame to date, when accounting for life-to-dollar figures. That’s a very impressive figure, especially when you compare it to the two games that rank higher than Naughty Dog’s latest title. As it stands, only Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War (2018) stand taller on life-to-dollar rankings, although The Last of Us Part II outpaced them both in terms of launch window sales.

According to the report, The Last of Us Part II was the fourth-best-selling game of July, with another PlayStation exclusive, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima taking the crown for this month – it’s also Sony’s fastest-selling new IP of the generation. As it stands though, The Last of Us Part II is currently third on the top-selling games of the year, behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2020) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and also one of the best-reviewed games on Metacritic.

Not a bad year for Sony then, considering that we’re coming up to the dawn of a new console generation, with both Sony and Microsoft looking to start the next generation on the front foot. That might be a little bit harder for Microsoft now, with the news that one of Xbox’s most high-profile launch releases in Halo Infinite won’t actually launch with the Series X at all.
