The Last God, a creator-owned fantasy series published by DC, is about to get a name change. The Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Riccardo Federici ran from October 2019 until January last year. Then in April, it was collected into a hardcover edition. Now, according to Bleedingcool, the series is getting a new printing and a new name: The Fellspyre Chronicles.

Why Not Keep The Last God Name?

The reason for the name change is not really known. However, there are a few potential reasons for such a change. The name change could be a hint that the series is returning. This may be part of a rebranding of sorts in preparation for a new series announcement set within the Johnson’s world. Another potential reason could be that the series, which is quite popular amongst comic readers, is getting a film/tv adaptation. Changing the name may be to avoid conflicting with another film or television project.

Or, it could simply be a trademark issue. Of course, the new name isn’t really new. The series is actually subtitled as The Last God: Book One Of The Fellspyre Chronicles for its original run. So, it is less of a new name and more just dropping the initial part. Yet, when a new printing is released this October, it will no longer be The Last God.

What Is The Series About?

For those who may have missed or overlooked The Last God, it is quite the ride. It follows two sets of heroes fighting against the same threat decades apart. One group of heroes inevitably dooms their world by destroying the last living God. Meanwhile, the other group must band together to save their world. The series is a great story on the power of perspective and doing what we believe is right.

While the reason for the name change is unknown, it does feel like something is in the works. Perhaps this isn’t the last we have seen of The Last God.
