Bad news for those of you who enjoy Fox’s X-Men spin-off show, The Gifted. A recent report from Variety states that the series has been canceled.
Or, at least, for now. Whilst the show has indeed left mainstream television, some hope remains that it may get picked up by a streaming service. After all, such beloved fan favorite series’ such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Lucifer have successfully risen from the pits of TV hell into the heaven of modern streaming. Why not The Gifted, then?
Although it was hardly an exceptional hit – averaging less than 2 million viewers per episode in Season 2, a 40% decrease from previous season’s viewership – the show has its dedicated fanbase. The Gifted showrunner Matt Nix anticipated the show’s axing in February but raised some slither of hope in the show continuing on the internet. After all, as Nix noted to Digital Spy last month, “[they] do well on streaming so there may be, my hope is that there’s something to work out in that realm”.
In fact, as Deadline helpfully reports, there is a chance the teen superhero show could find a new home on Disney+. The streaming service is due for release later in the year and is already hyped to be chock-full of exclusive superhero shows. Could The Gifted potentially be among them?
At this point, it’s up in the air.
But while The Gifted has been given an immediate ax, its sister show, Legion, is still definitely proceeding for a final third season starting June 2019 on Fox. The show received an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising bold departure from traditional superhero-genre shows.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for your next fix of live-action X-Men, then X-Men: Dark Phoenix is also being released this coming June. It is notable since it appears to be the last film to take place in the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe.
