After years of talk about a possible adaptation for Gears of War, it was officially revealed that Universal would be developing a movie based on the classic Xbox IP alongside Microsoft and The Coalition. That was back in 2016. Now, we finally have some new information on the project courtesy of IGN and The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson.
During an interview with IGN, Fergusson revealed that the movie will divulge from the Gears of War games:
Fergusson continued:
So, it looks like the Gears of War film will not be a straight-up adaptation to the Gears of War franchise as we know it today but Fergusson did say that the movie will feature a few characters from the game and would still take place on Sera.
Video game movie adaptations are tricky. Other than a select few titles, most of them end up as mediocre or borderline horrendous movies. While Detective Pikachu mostly worked and 2018’s Tomb Raider had its moments, there are many movies that have been ridiculed for years by video game fans and critics alike. Adaptations for Resident Evil, Ratchet and Clank, and even Assassin’s Creed come to mind when you think about lackluster game to movie adaptations. Here’s hoping Gears of War finds better success.
