Through their production company Upside Down Pictures, the Duffer Brothers are creating a live-action series adaptation of Death Note for Netflix. They are also working on a Stranger Things spinoff and adaptation of a Stephen King story. This will be the second time that Netflix has tried making a live-action version of Death Note. The first time was the 2017 Death Note film which had horrific reviews. Fortunately, the Duffer Brother’s version is completely separate from the 2017 version. Their production company is helping to make the live-action Death Note series for Netflix, but that doesn’t mean the Duffer Brothers will write and direct it. The Duffers made a name for themselves through their Netflix series Stranger Things, which is nearing its end. That series is now one of the most popular series on the streaming service. The brothers have their work cut out for them with their adaptation line-ups.
The Duffer Brothers Went from Short Film Directors to Hit Series Directors and Writers
Before they became famous for Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers made the psychological horror film Hidden. They also wrote and produced the Fox television series, Wayward Pines. Now they will be adapting the 1984 novel The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. They’ll make it with Stranger Things co-executive producer and writer Curtis Gwinn, as well as with Paramount Television and Amblin Entertainment. That team is also working on a Stranger Things stage play and an original series with creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Besides their focus on Season 5 of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers have the Netflix live-action series Death Note. They will have to make up for the past failings of the previous live-action adaptation by Netflix. Only time and reviews will tell whether or not the Duffer Brothers are successful with their live-action series adaptation of Death Note.
It will be a while before fans will see the Netflix retry of a live-action adaptation of Death Note.
