The survival genre’s popularity is back on the rise after the Viking-themed Valheim managed to become a viral hit early this year. Considering there are already a ton of survival games in the market, it’s not easy to find ones like Valheim. But don’t fret! We have compiled a list of medieval-themed survival games like Valheim that you can play on PC or on the go via mobile platforms. Check them all out below.
Games Like Valheim on Mobile
1. Frostborn: Coop Survival
If you’re looking for the one that’s identical to Valheim, then this is your best choice. Frostborn features a Viking theme, crafting and building system, as well as boats and ship that lets you set sail towards unknown lands. While playing co-op, both your and your friend’s bases will be connected. This way you can move between bases or join them into one mighty stronghold. Having a strong base will definitely help when you need to trade items with other players. Or if you just want to mess about, warring and forming war alliances can help you move up in the world as well.
There are also over a dozen classes you can pick in Frostborn, such as Thrasher, Assassin, Pathfinder, and more. And you can freely change it any time you want to experiment with various playstyles. The game is available on both Android and iOS devices.
2. Stormfall: Saga of Survival
Want to throw a magical twist into your survival game? Then you should get your hands on Stormfall: Saga of Survival. As its name stands, in this game survival is key. You start out your adventure in the snowy mountain peak with nothing on your back and have to look out for your well-being. Starving and thirst can easily end your life. Of course, after a while, you’ll get to collect resources, build shelter, fight tough enemies in creepy dungeons, and eventually learn to use magic. Both Android and iOS devices support the game.
3. Grim Soul: Dark Fantasy Survival
In this self-proclaimed “dark fantasy survival MMORPG”, you don’t have to bother with hunger and thirst. However, your weapons and tools are still at risk of being broken. Gather materials, build a base and fortifications, raise horses, and ride into battles together with your trusty steed and an arsenal of deadly weapons from halberds to crossbows. You can also join clans to increase your chances of survival. Especially if you want to do dungeon crawling for that sweet loot. You can play it on Android and iOS.
4. Exile Survival – Craft, build, fight with monsters
Set in ruined lands after ruthless gods unleashed a bloody massacre on each other, as one of the survivors you have to explore and rebuild the world. Like Grim Souls, this game is more focused on combat, crafting, and building rather than pure survival gameplay. And compared to other mobile survival games, Exile Survival is a bit easier to get into since the game gives you “tutorials” in the form of waypoints to items and landmarks. Unfortunately for iOS users, this game is only available on Android.
5. The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands
Compared to the previous titles, this one is more about city building. But of course, maintaining a proper balance between expansion and saving resources is important to survive monster attacks during the nights. The Bonfire also has a sequel, but aesthetically, it’s a bit more modern and no longer feels medieval. With that in mind, I chose the first game to be featured in this article. It is available on both Android and iOS devices.
6. Kingdom Two Crowns
Similar to The Bonfire, Kingdom Two Crowns is a side-scrolling survival-and-town-management game. Play the role of a monarch atop their steed and recruit loyal subjects, build your kingdom and protect it from the threat of the Greed. This game features three different story modes: base game, dark fantasy-themed Deadlands that has Miriam from Bloodstained in it, and Japanese-themed Shogun. Furthermore, you can play it in co-op on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Android devices.
Games Similar to Valheim on PC
1. Medieval Dynasty
Set in Europe in the early Middle Ages, you take on the role of a young man who has fled from war and wants to take his fate into his own hands. Follow the main chapters and solve questlines, or roam around the vast medieval world. Develop your own character, interact with NPCs, and eventually build your own homestead to survive. Not just to keep your character to live for another day but also to build a thriving dynasty that will reign for generations. Medieval Dynasty is still in Early Access so let’s see how far developer Render Cube can expand this particular title.
2. Niffelheim
Need more Viking action like Valheim? This survival side-scrolling dungeon crawler game might be up your alley. Explore dangerous dungeons, fight off the Death Priests and its minions, craft tools, and build a fortress to collect all the pieces of the portal to Asgard.
3. Alchemist’s Awakening
As the title suggests, in this game you play as a fledgling young alchemist. Your understanding of the alchemy technique lets you recombine nine primary elements into other shapes and materials. Build houses, terraform the land using complex machines, and fight off wild creatures and thieves. You can also discover more of the magical world through Creative, cooperative, or PVP mode.
4. Conan Exiles
If we’re talking about fantasy medieval series though, I don’t think Conan needs an introduction. Instead of playing as The Barbarian though, you’re just a barbarian trying to survive after being saved by Conan. Forge the legacy of your clan as you fight to reclaim and dominate the Exiled Lands. Build houses and entire cities. And of course, wage war in single-player, co-op, or persistent online multiplayer.
5. Outward
Even though Outward focuses more on adventuring elements and doesn’t have building mechanics, the survival system is pretty harsh. Food spoils easily, plus bad weather and infections that could get you sick are just a few dangers you have to look out for in the game’s world. Thankfully you can grab friends for some local or online shenanigans. The game is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia.
6. Wurm Unlimited
If you’ve heard this game long before Valheim and Minecraft, don’t be surprised. This is the standalone version of the 2006 fantasy sandbox Wurm Online. Although it is quite old, the game pretty much features staple mechanics of the survival genre. It’s packed with Creative and Adventure mode and of course, crafting and building systems, and so much more. The biggest hurdle I think is just the outdated graphics and obtuse system.
