The Alienists Return
Acting as a sequel series to the 2018 debut season, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness will bring back familiar faces and some new ones as Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, John Moore, and Sara Howard lead a new investigation on a child kidnapper in the midst of America’s Gilded Age.
The trailer for Angel of Darkness showcases the new conflict and where our heroes are now for this next chapter. Dr. Kreizler (played by Daniel Brühl of Rush and Inglourious Basterds) has made a promise to a mother – about to be executed by electric chair – that he will find her missing baby. This is where Moore (played by Luke Evans of The Hobbit trilogy and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women), now a New York Times reporter, will reunite with his friend to tackle this dark case of treachery, mayhem, and murder. Howard (played by Dakota Fanning of Coraline and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) has established her own private detective agency. He will be joined by her two fellow partners-in-fighting-crime.
The second season will deal with several issues that were on the rise during this Gilded Age in America (1877-1895). Such issues will include corruption within institutions, women’s rights, yellow press journalism and the effects of it upon society, and income inequality amongst the rapidly growing economy.
Reprising their roles are Douglas Smith and Matthew Shear, who portray twin brothers, Marcus, and Lucius Isaacson. Robert Ray Wisdom returns as Cyrus, with Ted Levine also coming back to play as former NYPD Police Commissioner Thomas Byrnes. Actresses Melanie Field and Rosy McEwen will be introduced as new characters in Angel of Darkness.
The Alienist was a critical and commercial success when it first premiered on TNT in 2018. It earned six Emmy nominations (winning one for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role), including Outstanding Limited Series, and two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Television Limited Series.
The Alienist: Angel of Darkness is being produced by Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content. It will be based on Caleb Carr’s second mystery novel in his Kreizler series, which is simply titled The Angel of Darkness.
The sequel series will also be a part of TNT’s Suspense Collection (which includes the first season of The Alienist and I Am The Night). The Alienist: Angel of Darkness is set to debut on Sunday, July 26, 2020, on TNT.
