Video games have been around for such a long time, and they have evolved from the highly pixelated gems we grew up with to the three-dimensional first-person characters we see today.

Some games are play-and-go, while others have a lengthy introduction that features a backstory. Even so, it can be tricky to inject some humor into a game’s plot or portray a character as funny. Unless the characters originate from a tv show or movie and people are familiar with their comedic personalities. For instance, people who enjoy casino games and their fantastic bonuses know how advantageous character placement is for the game.

In a video game, though, it might be harder to introduce a character as the humorous one without it being seen as the boisterous sidekick or the lunatic villain. Let’s look at a few of the funniest video game characters that have a comedy temperament.

8) GLaDOS – Portal

GLaDOS is the fictional artificial intelligence computer system you’ll see in Portal 1 and Portal 2. Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift created the character, and Ellen McLain voices it. GLaDOS makes the game enjoyable as it is the only other character besides the player. Some of its favorite quotes include, “It’s a guaranteed fact that 80% of you will lose this hand. And 100% of you will eventually die. Maths is fun, isn’t it?!” and “The cake is gone!”

7) Wheatley – Portal 2

Wheatly is the idiotic new addition to the Portal series. He is a robotic sphere whose initial mission was to help the antagonist Chell through the ordeals of the Aperture Science facility. Wheatley is moronic, obsessive, and skittish for a futuristic robot, and most of his humor stems from his inadequacy to prove his competence.

6) ClapTrap – Borderlands 2

Okay, I’ll admit, ClapTrap is one of the more annoying side characters in the game, but he’s also super funny. I mean, “I am going to teabag your corpse,”… that’s just first-level insane. There’s a chance you’ll get irritated by his constant need to call you a minion and his cowardice, but all that aside, you can’t help but become attached to the rusty nuisance.

5) Dr. Edward Richtofen – Call of Duty: Zombies

Those who enjoy the Call of Duty series with zombies will most likely be familiar with Dr. Richtofen. He is the epitome of every stereotype anyone’s ever had about German military men in the 70s. The doctor is conniving, crazy, and a little deviant (if you know what I mean). He gives off ‘mad Nazi scientist’ vibes, and his glee at decapitated heads and severed limbs make him a hit in the series.

4) HK-47 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

HK-47 brings aside to the Star Wars series you’ve never seen before, and that is side-splitting laughter. Originally built as an assassin drone, HK-47’s primary function is to be the bringer of death. It is a psychotic metalhead with absolute contempt for human life and eternal joy in killing.

3) Ratchet – Ratchet & Clank

The cool thing about Ratchet is that his humor is appropriate for adults as much as kids. He’s developed efficiently over time, and his pompous attitude from the first game seems to have disappeared. Although the jerk Ratchet is gone, he’s managed to keep his quirky humor while portraying a deep storyline for audiences.

2) Captain Qwark – Ratchet & Clank

Captain Qwark may be the stupidest yet most hilarious character in the program. Yes, he is silly, but you just got to love him, with his funny lines and deep musings. He is supposed to be the ‘galaxy’s greatest superhero’ yet always manages to land himself in trouble while Ratchet ends up saving him.

1) Dr. Eggman – Sonic the Hedgehog

Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik is the main antagonist in Sega’s Sonic series and is portrayed as a rotund mad scientist who wants to conquer the world. However, Sonic and Tails always manage to get in the way of his plans, making every single game a hilarious cesspool of disaster. As soon as the doctor thinks he’s reached his goal, Sonic happily sabotages his plans.

In Closing

I’m glad to say that there are several funny characters in video games, and dare I say; it all depends on your humor meter. Who’s the best video game characters of all time? There’s the easy-going humor that Ratchet and Dr. Eggman offer, and then there’s the hardcore R-rated comedy that only adults should be engaging with. Nevertheless, playing the above games and more are bound to get a snicker out of you.
