The coronavirus has quickly changed the very way we all need to operate for a while in 2020. After many events have shut down for the next few months and those who are immunocompromised at risk, many are taking the smart move to quarantine themselves. Since the virus’ early days in China, quarantines have proven to be the best move to prevent the disease from spreading too fast. Even with those measures in place, though, coronavirus quickly spread throughout the world from people traveling and not showing proper hygiene procedures. Fast forward to March and many huge events in the gaming industry are being shut down. GDC was the first to postpone, followed shortly after by E3. Quickly, many gaming companies began taking the steps to allow workers to work from home including Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, Bungie, and Nintendo of America (who had one confirmed case of coronavirus).
The problem with being stuck inside all day is that things tend to get a little boring. There are only so many shows you can watch on Netflix before you want to throw your television out the window. Don’t worry, though, video games are here to save the day once again. Unsurprisingly, multiple video games in the past have dealt with quarantines. This includes nuclear war, forcing humanity to hide underground from radiation to keeping zombies away from your loved ones. Social distancing is easy enough for gamers, but for those looking for quarantine inspired games, be sure to look into these games.
Fallout Shelter
Fallout Shelter released for free on mobile phones in 2015 and later released on home consoles, so this is one of the most accessible quarantine games you’ll be able to find. As in other games in the Fallout series, nuclear bombs have destroyed the world. You are tasked with building a proper vault for survivors to take refuge in.
Each room will help your vault thrive in different ways and will need vault dwellers assigned to them to increase their outputs. Certain hazards will pop up randomly, putting your dwellers at risk, including fires, radroach infestations, and radscorpion attacks.
Fallout Shelter is a free game that is an excellent way of making time pass while you may be stuck indoors.
Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative zombie shooter that sees you and three others work your way through the hordes of undead. Each level is a linear path filled with special infected that will tear you apart if you do not work with your teammates properly on your way to each safe room.
Left 4 Dead 2 features a broken-down civilization that is eerie and creepy in its quiet moments, and loud and adrenaline pumping in its action moments. The AI Director ensures every game is a new experience by placing items in different areas, changing the layouts of the level, and increasing the infected hordes depending on how well you are proceeding through the game. It is a perfect game to play with friends online at this time.
Dead Rising 2
Almost any Dead Rising game could make this list, but we are going to focus on Chuck’s battle for survival in Fortune City. He is an ex-motocross racer, now trying to protect his daughter Katey who has been bitten by a zombie.
After his appearance on the zombie slayer show Terror is Reality, Chuck is framed for causing a zombie outbreak that leaves the entire casino resort infested with zombies. Chuck needs to clear his name while escorting survivors to a quarantined safe zone and finding Zombrex medicine to keep Katey from joining the undead.
Metro: Last Light
Metro: Last Light is a first-person shooter set in the Moscow metro following the nuclear war that infected the world above with toxic oxygen and mutated monsters, forcing humans to live underground.
The protagonist of the first Metro game, Artyom, returns and is a ranger now. Throughout the game, you feel the dark, low feeling Metro consistently puts out of a civilization forced underground and fighting to survive. It incorporates stealth and survival elements to make it a game that requires your attention in multiple areas.
The Division 2
The Division 2 is a looter shooter set in Washington, D.C., following the outbreak of the dollar flu that has killed many civilians and shut down society as we know it. You create a character who is a part of the government force named The Division. These people are the best of the best when it comes to militaristic operations. The gangs of D.C.have taken over and are creating chaos in the streets. Using your gadgets, you take out any opposition and collect better gear to make yourself strong enough to withstand any opposition continually.
State of Decay 2
State of Decay 2 is an open-world zombie survival game that sees you slowly build up a community of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. Any person in your community can be played with upgradeable stats that make the task of collecting supplies and surviving slightly easier as time goes on.
The stakes are always high in State of Decay 2. Any character killed in the game will be gone for good, so if you have put a lot of work into leveling them up and raising them in your community, you could quickly lose a crucial part to your group. There are multiple areas to set your home up in and plenty of special infected that can quickly make an easily won battle turn south soon if they attack you rightly.
