The wait is over for Psych-Os, as the third movie has finally been released on Peacock. Psych 3: This Is Gus has been highly regarded among the community as the best Psych movie, and for good reason. The show ran for eight seasons, and with the success of the third movie, it looks like the Psych train isn’t going to stop anytime soon. Like the show and the previous two movies, the third outing is full of heartfelt, tear-jerking moments. For a franchise so funny and often immature, you’d be surprised just how much heart it has. There are more than a few heartwarming Psych 3 moments, but only a select few stand out.
10. Carlton and his Daughter
In the final season, tough and stern Carlton Lassiter has a daughter. Due to a very real stroke actor Timothy Omundson had behind the scenes, Lassiter’s role was cut significantly in the first movie, meaning fans did not see how Lassie dealt with parenthood. Even the second film omitted this, as the character of Lassiter also had a stroke to mirror Omundson’s own recovery. The third film, however, finally shows Lassiter with his daughter, and it was well worth the wait. Carlton evolved over the course of the series, and seeing the once cold detective holding his daughter’s hands is enough to make any Psych-O shed manly tears, present company included.
9. Henry and Shawn
Henry and Shawn’s relationship has always been…rocky to say the least. While both clearly admire and respect each other, they butt heads on virtually everything. While they aren’t as distant now as they were in the pilot episode, they certainly have some work to do. This doesn’t mean they don’t share multiple touching father and son moments, especially in this film. Shawn is scared he is going to lose his best friend, and he feels Henry is the only place he can go for help. While Henry may not tell Shawn what he wants to hear, he tells him what he needs to hear which is even more important.
8. Henry and Lassiter
Carlton and Henry shared several scenes together in the show, but none as deep as this. Ever since his stroke, Lassiter has felt unsure of himself both as a cop, and a father, Luckily for him, Henry is both and is more than willing to offer some advice. While sitting on Carlton’s porch (which used to be Henry’s) the two men share stories and their woes to one another, in a scene that is sure to top the most touching list of any Psych fan, and is certainly one of the most heartwarming Psych 3 moments.
7. Gus Reassuring Shawn
There is nothing quite like having a best friend, and none are closer than Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster. It is a sad moment then when Shawn reveals to his father that he feels he is drifting away from his friend. I think we have all felt this way before, and I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say it’s an awful feeling. Shawn confronts Gus about this, and Gus reassures him that he will always be a part of his life. As heartwarming as the scene is, it is still done in typical Psych fashion and follows a hysterical fight between the two.
6. Godparents
Early in the movie, Juliet expressed her wishes to be named as godmother to Gus and Selene’s child. It became a running joke throughout, and when the question if finally asked it was hard to hold back tears. Gus and Shawn have been part of each other’s lives for as long as they can remember, so it is touching and fitting that they will be in each other’s kids’ lives as well. Through Shawn and Gus, Jules and Selene became friends as well, and seeing the couples come together as one in this way is nothing short of tearjerking.
5. Curt’s Music Video
A fan favorite Psych guest star is Curt Smith from the popular 80s band Tears for Fears. A running joke throughout Psych 3, is that Curt wants to join the newly reformed Wham!. When this doesn’t pan out, Curt makes his own band, with certain things changed to avoid being sued of course. The film ends with a music video made by Curt featuring his friends. While the music video and song itself are played purely for laughs, Psych-Os realized something special. This music video marks the first time Shawn, Gus, Jules, Vick, and of course Lassiter are seen on screen together since the final season of the show. While it would have been nice to hear some dialogue between the reformed group, it was refreshing and heartwarming seeing them all together again.
4. Shawn Helping Lassiter Solve Crimes
Shawn has helped Lassie solve crimes since day 1, whether Lassie wants him to or not. After his accident in Psych 2, Lassiter feels as if he can no longer serve and protect as well as he used to. In between movies, he enlists Shawn to help him solve cases, and feed him information through an earpiece. As comedic as this scene is, it is heartwarming in the fact Lassie respects and trusts Shawn enough at this point to ask him to do it at all. This is a true testament to how far the characters and their relationship have grown since the early seasons of the show, and is a perfect heartwarming Psych 3 moment.
3. Shawn and Juliet Decide Their Future
Just because something is heartwarming doesn’t mean it isn’t heartbreaking. Psych 3 reveals that in between movies, Shawn and Jules decided it was best for them not to have children. Shawn and Jules’ relationship is…unique to say the least. The two are both incredibly busy and both claim they are happy the way things are. Fans would love to see these two have a baby and may have been disappointed at this revelation. The heartwarming aspect, however, is that they both imply they are open to changing their minds, hinting that a Spencer baby may arrive in the future.
2. Gus’ Wedding
Shawn and Jules had a quick and comedic wedding fitting of the franchise at the end of the first movie. Gus made it his mission to ensure the opposite happened to him. Of course, this is a Psych movie, so the exact opposite happens. Terrified of having a baby out of wedlock, Gus demands he has his wedding with Selene while she is in labor…in a safe room. Gus realizes that his groomzilla ways were pointless because the only thing he needed at his wedding was Selene at the “altar” and his best friend by his side. Gus’ wedding was perfect in the eyes of fans, and fitting of the hilarity of Psych.
1. Gus’ Son
The biggest revelation of the second Psych movie was that Gus and Selene were having a child. The third movie takes place months later, and Selene is about to pop. Literal seconds after their rushed wedding, Selene begins giving birth. The birthing scene is, in my humble opinion, one of the funniest scenes Psych has ever put out. Between Gus putting a new twist on his catchphrase and Shawn actually delivering a baby, the scene had me in stitches. However, when it is all said and done, it is a sweet moment that makes for a perfect ending to a near-perfect movie, and I believe the most heartwarming Psych 3 moment.
