Calling back to the arcade days of yesterday, Tribute Games is bringing back a timeless classic with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. Revitalizing the classic brawling beat ’em up, players can join up with three others and play as their favorite turtles to stop Shredder in his villainous plot. With the release of the Tribute Games title, we got our hand on a copy of the game. Find out how it is with our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge review.

Story: A simplistic story that welcomes fans and newcomers alike

With Bebop and Rocksteady assaulting Channel 6 and stealing super gnarly devices to support Krang and Shredder’s latest twisted plan, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge sees the turtles battling various locations from Manhattan and Coney Island to city rooftops and dank sewers, help the fearsome foursome trounce Foot Soldiers, Triceraton Warriors, and Rock Troops all the way to Dimension X.

Like many of the 2D brawlers of the past, the game focuses more on gameplay. This decision will give players a functionally nonexistent story containing basic story beats to progress them through the game. You’ll need to chase down Shredder and stop him from doing bad guy things. But then again, simplicity within the story works well for this kind of game giving players a feeling of just watching an old episode of the original animated show. If you’re a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe, you’ll be treated to a game packed with fan-service references and in-jokes. And even if you’re a newcomer to the game and the animated series, the game won’t be too complex not to enjoy what story there is.

Gameplay: A smooth and fast-paced beat-’em up made for playing with friends.

Looking back at the classic beat ’em ups, the simplistic actions like moving up and down, attacking enemies, and completing combos can be a pain. Tribute Games did not just follow suit with their title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This new title gives a cleaner and more solid feel to gameplay and combat. Movements are smooth and crisp, allowing for fast aerial attacks and quick dashing to gain ground or avoid oncoming enemy attacks.

Characters all have the same basic moves, allowing players to switch from character to character without a steep learning curve. The game offers a tutorial that will explain how to play. Characters get the opportunity also to show off their distinct personalities in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. While sharing all the same basic moves, how they execute these moves will differ with each. Leonardo will wield his trusty katanas, while April will beat up bad guys with her boom mic. While the result of these attacks is the same, it is a nice touch to the game, allowing characters to retain their personalities.

There are also special attacks that each character will have, charged by defeating enemies, and can be unleashed to deal substantial damage to enemies. These special attacks, like the basic moves, will also feature each character’s flair continuing the touches that Tribute Games brought to the revival of this arcade classic.

Characters will also have variations in their stats, allowing players to choose whos best for their playstyle. Each character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will have stats rated by one to three stars in strength, speed, and range. Michaelangelo has fast attacks and can move around quickly but suffers from a short range of attacks requiring getting close. Compared to Splinter, whose movements are slower but with attacks that pack a serious punch. Some upgrades can be earned by reaching milestones with each character. These upgrades can boost stats and also unlock additional attacks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge features online and couch co-op, letting you jump in with others. It’s worth noting that while playing with others will decrease the difficulty of fighting alone, the game will make up for adding new players. The game will increase its difficulty once you go above three players and continues to the max of six. The online modes function well, allowing players to find one another quickly and jump in the shoes of their favorite characters.

Graphic/Audio: A colorful and smooth 2D side scroller

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge calls back to the arcade days showcasing the nostalgic 2D side scroller. Trekking through colorful 2D recreations of New York City, dispatching color-coordinated baddies reaching the climactic boss fight will deliver a world drenched in the lore of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe. Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe will be treated to a beautifully colorful world featuring all the characters they knew from the series while also being a smooth and sharp experience with no noticeable bugs or issues.
