It’s been over 30 years since Steve Barron’s iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. While Raphael, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Donatello, have had a few big-screen and small-screen forays since, nothing seems to capture the magic and nuance of the original. However, that could all be about to change, since producer Kim Dawson and writer Bobby Herbeck have hinted at how much they would enjoy to bring the classic Turtle team to modern audiences.
In an interview (via. ComicBook), the writer of the 1990 movie, Bobby Herbeck, shared that he has already had discussions of a potential reboot/sequel. The topic came up when discussing franchises making comebacks decades after its inception. “We’re trying to make that happen. We want to do a reboot,” Herbeck said. “We’d love to do it”. It seems like they’re really pushing for it!
If true, this will be an amazing project to look forward to, especially since we’re living in an age where comic book movies are all the rage. There has never been a better time to bring the TMNT back to the big screen. What Jim Henson’s Creature Shop could achieve with the advancements in modern filmmaking technology after thirty years would be very substantial. Herbeck touched on this point when explaining why a reboot would be a good idea. “The truth is, this property, it’s established now after 30 years as a part of our modern pop culture, it’s not going away”. He further added in a statement:
