The teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released this evening during the MTV Movie & TV Awards. And even though no actual film footage was shown, it is still a suspenseful trailer sure to get you excited for this prequel film to The Hunger Games trilogy. People Magazine describes this visually impressive trailer, which features a Mockingjay and a snake in a tree shedding snow off of themselves, with the snake looking to devour the bird. The trailer’s text reads, “You’re invited to return to the games. In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

‘The Hunger Games’ Prequel We’ve Been Waiting For Since 2020

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name. While the novel was released in May of 2020, Lionsgate announced plans to adapt the novel into a movie a month before the novel was released. This bold move may pay off since the book received generally positive reviews, with Polygon calling it a “darkly satisfying origin story.” The story centers on an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who in the novel is far from the callous and brutal dictator from the trilogy. Once a member of one of the Capitol’s wealthiest families, the orphaned Snow is living in poverty with his grandmother and cousin. He is shocked when he is chosen to be a mentor in the tenth Hunger Games. Specifically, he is chosen to be a mentor for Lucy Gray Bird from District 12. When Lucy  sings defiantly during the reaping ceremony, Snow sees an opportunity to turn the odds in their favor.

Previously portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original Hunger Games trilogy, Coriolanus Snow will be portrayed by 27-year-old actor Tom Blyth of the Epix series Billy the Kid. 21-year-old actress Rachel Zegler, who we recently saw as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, will portray Lucy Graiy Baird.

This trailer for The Hunger Games prequel will have to hold us over until the film is released on November 17, 2023. Then we will learn who is the songbird and who is a snake.
