Even celebrities have insecurities! Hollywood ladies’ man John Mayer went public with his sobriety journey and how it has affected his dating life and relationship with women. The singer, known for tracks like New Light, and Half of My Heart featuring his then-girlfriend Taylor Swift, admitted it took more than just courage to approach and date his high-profile exes.

John Mayer Needed “Liquid Courage” To Boost His Dating Profile

While appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 45-year-old admitted that dating for him was “no longer a codified activity.” He attributed this shift from his longstanding reputation to his decision to quit drinking. According to the Grammy winner, he became sober about six years back and has since lacked the “liquid courage” to date. He quipped:

John’s sobriety journey began in 2016 after attending Drake’s 30th birthday party, which left him with a six-day hangover. He previously opened up about this turning point, admitting he hasn’t had a sip since October 23, 2016.

John’s Take On Being A “Womanizer”

Given the reputation John Mayer built for himself over the years for dating famous women like Taylor Swift, it seems unlikely that his boost and self-confidence only came from booze. Yet the crooner firmly believes so. Explaining his take on how the world perceived him, the icon told podcast host Alex Cooper,

According to John Mayer, his dating reputation stemmed from his upbringing, which left him believing someone could only show interest in him by accident. Hence, when such “accidents” do happen, he needed to capitalize on the opportunity. These insecurities made him feel “very deeply” whenever someone liked him, hence his many relationships.

Over the years, John Mayer has been linked to the likes of Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, Minka Kelly, Jennifer Hewitt, and Katy Perry. His romance with Taylor Swift gained traction in 2009, culminating in the release of their track, Half of My Heart. Their split was also as eventful, with Taylor detailing the events of their romance and breakup in her 2010 song, Dear John, which greatly contributed to the general perception of the Gravity crooner as a playboy.
