Ireland-based independent video game developer Squid Monkey Studios recently announced the April 30, 2021 release date for its upcoming survival horror dungeon crawling game The Caretaker. The announcement was accompanied by the game’s first gameplay trailer (embedded below), and the closing of The Caretaker Survival Mode Beta Playtest sessions.
According to the official press release, The Caretaker pits you into the small city of Red Chapel, in the midst of an apocalyptic disaster. The city’s Research Power Facility has been sabotaged by persons unknown for reasons unknown, which has mutated the local population into hideous and nightmarish creatures. You must explore the city, scavenge for supplies, find and craft items for your survival, and somehow escape the city, all the while fighting and running from hundreds of “roaming gangs of hideous creatures waiting to devour anything still breathing.”
Created by solo developer Nik Kemski, The Caretaker is set during the modern era, with many of the same ideals and themes current in real life. Along with engaging survival horror and dungeon crawler-esque gameplay, Kemski has crafted The Caretaker as a revealing exploration into the potential follies of “human ignorance, regret, and pride.” During gameplay, you’ll encounter these plot revelations “through the lives of fallen victims and the encounters of failed experimentation.” He also had the following to say:
The Caretaker’s press kit page on the studio’s website currently lists the game’s launch price at $9.99. You can click over to the game’s webpage, Steam page, and the dev’s YouTube channel for more info.
